Gorge wind, rain and Mt. Hood trips
Gresham sits at the mouth of the Gorge, where winter east winds and ice storms catch weak batteries and bald tires, the long rainy season wears wipers and brakes, and trips up Highway 26 to Mt. Hood work brakes and cooling systems. On-site battery, brake and wiper checks keep East County drivers moving.
Getting around
Getting around Gresham
Gresham sits on the east side of the Portland metro at the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge, with I-84 running along its northern edge through Fairview and Troutdale toward the Gorge. US 26 runs through the city as Powell Boulevard and then the Mount Hood Highway, heading southeast toward Sandy and Mount Hood. Burnside Road, Division Street and Stark Street carry traffic between Gresham and east Portland. The Sandy River marks the eastern edge near Troutdale, and the Historic Columbia River Highway climbs from there into the Gorge.
181st and 182nd avenues run north and south through Rockwood toward I-84, and Hogan Road, also known as 242nd Avenue, links I-84 with downtown Gresham and the southern neighborhoods. Eastman Parkway and Kane Drive cross the hilly east side. The grid is easy to navigate, but rush hour on I-84 and Powell Boulevard backs up, and a breakdown on either one is hard to escape.
The MAX Blue Line runs along Burnside into downtown Gresham, ending at the Cleveland Avenue station, and its park-and-ride lots are popular with commuters headed into Portland. Mt. Hood Community College sits on the north side, and Portland International Airport is a short drive northwest via I-84 and I-205. The shopping centers near downtown and along Burnside double as handy meeting spots.
For a mobile mechanic, Gresham is mostly driveways and garages. Rockwood's apartments and dense blocks rely on lots and street parking, the neighborhoods around Gresham Butte have hilly streets and sloping driveways, and the newer subdivisions in Pleasant Valley have attached garages and wide streets. Many homes on the east side sit on larger lots with room for trailers, boats and work trucks.

Local conditions
What the Gorge and the rain do to cars in Gresham
-
Gresham sits right where the Columbia River Gorge opens onto the Portland basin, and in winter that position matters.
Cold east winds pour out of the Gorge at high speed, dropping temperatures fast and turning rain into freezing rain, sleet or snow while the rest of the metro stays merely wet. Ice storms coat cars, trees and power lines, and limbs and whole trees come down. Gusts strong enough to flatten fences also push high-profile vans and trucks around on I-84, and weak batteries and bald tires fail first when the east wind blows.
-
The rest of the wet season is steady rain.
Moisture creeps into connectors and door seals, moss grows on cars parked outside, and needles and leaves clog cowl and sunroof drains. Johnson Creek runs through the south side and floods low roads and parking lots during heavy rain, and driving through standing water can damage engines and electrical systems. Nursery and farm roads on the edges of town stay muddy for months and pack wheel wells with clay.
-
Summers are dry and warm, with occasional heat waves and wildfire smoke that clog cabin filters.
Trips up US 26 to Mount Hood put brakes and cooling systems to work on the long climb and descent, and the mountain requires traction tires or chains in winter. A fall check of battery, tires and wipers before the first east wind arrives is the most useful habit a Gresham driver can have.

Questions
Gresham FAQ
Do you serve Troutdale, Sandy and Happy Valley?
Yes. Gresham mobile mechanics typically cover East County, including Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village, Sandy and Happy Valley.
Do mobile mechanics work in the rain?
Yes. A carport or garage helps, but most repairs are done outdoors in Oregon weather.
Is same day service available?
Often, yes. Share your location and the problem for an arrival window.
My car won't start at a MAX park-and-ride. Can someone come?
Yes. Park-and-ride lots along the Blue Line are common places to find a dead battery at the end of the day. Tell the mechanic which station and lot, where the car sits and what you drive. The mechanic can test the battery, starter and charging system on the spot and replace whatever has failed so you can get home. Lots near the end of the line fill early on weekdays.
Can a mechanic come to my car at Mt. Hood Community College?
In most cases, yes, as long as the car is in a campus lot where a quick repair is permitted. Tell the mechanic which lot and roughly where the car sits. Dead batteries after a break, worn brakes and check-engine lights are the usual student requests, and getting them handled between classes saves a trip across town to a shop.
Does an east wind ice storm delay appointments?
It can. When the east wind brings freezing rain, the safest move is to wait until roads are treated and travel is reasonable. Urgent problems such as a car that will not start get handled as soon as it is safe. If an ice storm is forecast, it is worth having a weak battery or worn tires handled before it arrives, and keeping the car in a garage or carport makes the eventual repair easier.
